But, in itself, it is not adequate. The RBI also needs to make use of the statutory liquidity ratio, the other instrument available with it, with immediate effect. But the fight against inflation is a comprehensive process and every single element in the package is important. One has to recall the package of anti-inflationary measures applied by the government of India in 1974 with dramatic effect.
Interestingly, while most other areas of economics have undergone major changes in recent decades with sophisticated techniques and mathematically-oriented solutions, the area of inflation control has not changed beyond the days of the early economics classics. The basic principle that inflation occurs when too much of money chases fewer goods still remains the basis. This naturally means that money supply has to be strictly regulated and, second, the supply of goods has to be increased. The measures adopted by the RBI are surely the right steps in the direction of controlling the money supply. It will, no doubt, affect the liquidity of the banks, and through this the growth of some industries and the purchasing power of people at large. But these have to be accepted in the interest of the higher goal of bringing down inflation.
Some more steps also need to be taken. Interest rates must be given a second look. Then, the implementation of the government’s decision on the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission will imply the release of massive funds in the hands of the people. A part of it may be impounded through savings schemes and annuities. Once again, this will be unpopular with government employees, but should be accepted in the interest of reducing the cost of essential goods. Some restriction on dividend income may also be seriously considered, not on the lines of the ill-thought 1974 move of limiting dividend declarations, but by some other means by which part of the dividend income does not add to the purchasing power of the dividend receiver immediately.
But the real problem arises when we come to the supply side. There has been a global dimension of the increase of petroleum crude prices and many other essential commodities. Also, we have to give serious thought to bringing the rate of agricultural growth to the level it had reached several years ago and to give special importance to the growth of food crops. It is a matter of regret that a substantial number of farmers have, in recent years, given up foodgrains production and opted for growing cash crops which yield more money. There is no harm in paying farmers more for producing food crops. In fact, with our climate, where it is possible to produce some crops all the year round, India — unlike any Western country — has the potential to become a food grower for the entire world. But this option can only be explored after we have a second green revolution.
Attention should, therefore, be given to persuading farmers to grow good crops, to provide them with better seeds, better pesticides, and, above all, loans at easy rates of interest. Also, we need to give up our near-theological aversion to large-scale farming. Small farmers may be encouraged to join up for use of hired mechanical facilities such as tractors or harvesters. This will mean a considerable effort on the part of the administration, as well as those in politics and agricultural scientists. It is time for us to ask serious questions such as why India has been driven to the position of having to import pulses, an essential food crop and essential food for poorer sections, from overseas.
We have to evolve a strategy for reducing our dependence on petroleum. If global prices for crude petroleum have increased from less than $50 a barrel to nearly $120 per barrel in three years’ time and India has not been able to discover any domestic source of crude oil after the discovery of Bombay High during the early 1970s, common sense would indicate that we should have a strategy for reducing the use of imported petroleum. This would mean some very hard decisions like promoting inland waterways, the cheapest form of transport.
It was with this idea that we had promoted a new company — the Inland Water Navigation Corporation — years ago, but have now liquidated it because it was never tried seriously. We should return to that concept and try to promote inland water transportation in bulk in selected areas like, say, Kolkata to Allahabad, the waterways through Bangladesh to Assam and the northeastern states, the waterways that prevailed through the Buckingham Canal from Chennai to the South and perhaps improve the navigability of the Narmada and Tapti rivers. Also, we need to have more of hydel power and nuclear power, taking the emphasis away from petroleum-oriented thermal power.
This would also mean that we should not dismantle our traditional transportation systems in rural areas: cycle-rickshaw vans and bullock carts. They play a very important role in transportation in rural areas. These could be modernised. It will be foolish to replace them by motorised transportation which again means the use of imported oil.
While on the subject we should seriously think of demand management in sectors such as automobiles. India has today become one of the largest markets for automobiles in the world. This explains why nearly every automobile giant has constructed its own plant here. While the automobile industry is no doubt one of the biggest components of industrial growth, we should not shrink from some kind of demand management if only because we must in the long run aim at reducing the use of imported petroleum. These long-term measures will be of great importance in the ongoing fight against inflation. There are other short-term measures, such as banning futures trading in commodities and restricting the use of automobiles, as Singapore has done. Demand management and supply-side economics are both crucial in the war against inflation.
Dr Nitish Sengupta, an academic and an author, is a former Member of Parliament and a former secretary to the Government of India
I think.........

BBM,BBA Sale of applications

CMS opened its Admission process for 2008-09 year, BBM,BBA Programmes applications are for sale
I think.........

Infy delivers despite US slowdown, Rupee rise

Software major Infosys has managed to deliver a strong result despite a slowing US economy and a strengthening rupee. The company recorded a net profit of Rs 4,659 crore for the year ended March ’08, up 20.8 per cent over the year before. The company has recorded consolidated sales of Rs 16,692 crore, up 20.1 per cent over FY07.

More worrying however, is the fact that the company has given a lower earnings forecast for the coming year. The number of people it proposes to hire has also come down. For the coming year, Infosys has projected a top-line growth of 19.2 per cent to 21.1 per cent while profits are projected to increase by 16.3 per cent to 18.3 per cent. The company expects to touch revenues of $5 billion in FY09.

"Infosys managed to meet the earnings forecast for last year despite taking a hit of Rs 1,000 crore due to unfavourable exchange rates," said Mr Apurv Shah, research head, Prabhudas Lilladhar. "The outlook is a mix of cautious optimism. For the next one or two quarters, project flow will be slower as there is greater scrutiny on expenses during a slow phase," he added.

Going forward, the company expects things to get back to normal in a few months time. "The company is confident about the operating environment. They feel that new projects could get delayed over the next 4 to 5 months, but there will be no project cancellations," said Mr Gaurang Shah, IT analyst with Asit C Mehta Securities.

Apart from a turnaround in the US economy, exchange rates are also expected to be stable in the current fiscal due to weaker capital markets. Infosys has declared a final dividend of Rs 7.25 per share and a special dividend of Rs 20 per share. Together with the interim dividend paid out, this takes the total payout by the company to Rs 33.25 per share.
I think.........

Did you know?

* The owl is the only bird to drop its upper eyelid to wink. A male cigarette smoker will lose 10 years of his life compared to a non-smoker. A female beedi smoker will lose 8 years of life while a male beedi smoker will die about 6 years earlier," says Dr Prabhat Jha, Director, Centre for Global Health Research, University of Toronto, and the principal investigator of the study on smoking and death in India.
What is alarming is that smoking is responsible for about 1 in 20 deaths in women and 1 in 5 deaths in men between the ages of 30 and 69 in India. About 5 per cent women and 37 per cent men in India between the ages of 30 and 69 years are smokers. In this age group, smoking was associated with an increased risk of death from any medical cause.
120 million smokers -- almost 10 per cent of the world's smokers -- live in India.
While smoking has been on the rise in India, in most Western countries it has declined as a result of high taxes, strong warning labels, effective ban on advertisement and smoke-free work places and public places.
"The Indian public does not know, especially the poor and illiterate, and neither manufacturers nor the government is telling them anything about the consequences of tobacco use," says Dr Prakash C Gupta, Director, Healis-Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health, Mumbai, and one of the co-authors of the report.
"The price of tobacco products in real terms (adjusted for inflation) has gone down. Even though direct advertisements of tobacco products are banned, surrogate advertisement and promotional activities have increased tremendously," he says.
Though awareness is higher among the educated and smoking in this group is comparatively lower, studies reveal the educated are also not convinced anything will happen to them.
"The risk is much higher in middle aged smokers. Even anything as small between 1 to 7 cigarettes a day increases the risk. Among those who smoked only 1 to 7 cigarettes a day, smoking-associated excess deaths accounted for almost half of the deaths from any medical cause," Dr Jha told rediff.com on the telephone, while on a visit to India.
Dr Jha, a Rhodes Scholar, served at the World Bank and the World Health Organisation before joining the Centre for Global Health Research, Toronto. His family migrated to Canada [Images] from Ranchi in 1971.
India passed a law to print pictorial warnings on cigarette packs in 2003 as recommended by the World Health Organisation -- particularly to spread awareness in rural India -- but legal wrangles have delayed the measure so far. The law, which was to be implemented in 2006, has not come into force yet.
"Unfortunately, this measure is getting postponed and weakened for nearly two years without implementation. First, the skull and bones sign was made so-called 'optional' and now pictures are being revised because one of our ministers thinks they were 'repulsive'," Dr Gupta said in an e-mailed interview.
In countries like South Africa, picture warnings have worked and anti-tobacco activists feel it would have a similar impact in India.
The new study is the first nationally conducted survey and made world headlines when it was published on February 13 in the New England Journal of Medicine. For the research 900 field workers traveled to 1.1 million homes in all parts of India. The smoking habits of 74,000 smokers who died between 2001 and 2003 was compared to 78,000 existing smokers. The study was carried out by a team of 12 doctors from India, Canada and Great Britain.
The reason why there is such a high rate of deaths in India in spite of the fact that Indians start smoking later than American and Europeans is because Indians have a high rate of TB in rural areas and heart attacks in urban areas that accounts for deaths due to smoking.
"Stopping smoking can be highly effective but only 2% adults quit smoking in India," says Dr Jha. Do you let a baddriver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive colleagueruin your day? Unless you're a robot, you are bound to blow your top off. However, the mark of a sucessful person is how quickly he or shecan get back his or her focus on what's important.Sixteen years ago, I learned this lesson. I learn it in the back of a New YorkCity taxi cab. Here's what happen.I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were drivingin the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped outof a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy wh! o almost caused a big accident, whippedhis head around and he started yelling bad words at us.My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was reallyfriendly. So, I said, "Why did you do that? This guy almostruined your car and sent us to the hospital!"And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now called, 'The Law of theGarbage Truck'.Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full offrustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. Astheir garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. If they happen to dump iton you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and moved on. You'll be happier if youdid that rather than fight them.So this was it: 'The Law of the Garbage Truck'.I started thinking, how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And howoften do I take the! ir garbage and spread it to otherpeople: at work, at home, on the street? It was that day I said, "I'm not goingto do it anymore." I see garbage trucks everywhere andeveryday. I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my taxi driver, I don't make it a personal thing; Ijust smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parentsknow they have to welcome their kids home from school with hugsand kisses. Teachers and parents know that they have to be fully present and attheir best for the people they care about. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take overtheir day. What about you? What would happen in your life, startingtoday, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?Here's my bet. You'll be happier. So ... love the people who treat you ! right.Forget about the ones who don't.Believe that every thing happens for a reason. If you get a chance, TAKE IT!If it changes your life, LET IT!Nobody said it would be easy ....They just promised it would be WORTH IT
I think.........

Fidel Castro: Revolutionary of the 20th century

<span style="border-bottom: 1px dashed rgb(0, 102, 204); on July 31, 2006.

Castro, 81, has kept himself in the minds of Cubans, however, through a prolific flow of sick bed articles that ranged from denunciations of the U.S. war in Iraq to claiming that U.S. capitalism threatens the survival of humanity.

He said on Tuesday he would not return to lead his country, closing one chapter of the 20th century.

Vilified by opponents as a totalitarian dictator, Castro is admired in many Third World nations for standing up to the United States and providing free education and health care.

The Jesuit-educated lawyer and charismatic orator sought to transform Cuba into an egalitarian society and achieved health and literacy levels on a par with industrialized nations.

But critics, led by the United States and the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who left to live abroad, maintained that he turned the Caribbean island into a police state and his rejection of free enterprise ruined the economy.

Castro survived a CIA-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs, assassination attempts, Washington's longest trade embargo and the collapse of the Soviet Union I never expected it, not least having a neighbor -- the greatest power in the world -- trying to kill me every day," he said on July 21, 2006 at a summit of South American presidents in Argentina, where crowds greeted him like a rock star.

Anti-globalization youths the world over saw the leftist firebrand as a hero along with revolutionary icon Ernesto "Che" Guevara, his Argentine-born comrade-in-arms.

Castro caught the imagination of the left by pitting his small country against the United States and declaring Cuba a Marxist state even before the Berlin Wall was erected.

His brazen risk-taking took the world to the brink of nuclear war in 1962 when he allowed Moscow to place ballistic missiles in Cuba, leading to a 13-day stand-off between President John F. Seventy-percent of them were born after 1959 and have known no other leader. Until he fell ill, Castro was omnipresent in their lives through hours-long speeches and nonstop public activity, but he has not allowed statues of himself or streets named after him.

His pace slowed after fracturing a knee in a serious tumble after a speech in October 2004 seen live on television.

In 2006, the health of the man who said he had survived 638 assassination plots caved in. He underwent life-threatening operations to stop intestinal bleeding and infection. Pictures showed the once robust leader had lost weight and become gaunt and shuffling.

Castro was born on August 13, 1926, in Biran in eastern Cuba, the son of a Spanish immigrant who became a landowner. His family's farm was the first land Castro ordered confiscated by the state after his revolution.

"History will absolve me," Castro declared during his trial for a near-suicidal assault on July 26, 1953 on the Moncada barracks in the eastern city of Santiago, which launched his revolutionary movement.

In December, 1956, he returned from exile in Mexico on a overcrowded yacht called the "Granma" and landed with 81 followers in eastern Cuba. Galaxy Entertainment Corporation Ltd, part of the Future Group, is planning to setup 25 leisure and entertainment 'Sports Bar Express Zones' in India including passive (multiple plasmas, LCD TVs), and active sports (basket ball, pool table and dart board), Sanjay Saxeria, its director, told FE. Suncity Entertainment, through its sister concern Jovial Entertainment, is planning to launch 30 'Viking' zones, a blend of hang out zones in India with options like bowling alles, online gaming, console gaming, redemption games with an area size of between 10,000 sq ft to 60,000 sq ft in India in the next 24 months. Landmark Group is looking at scaling up the number of FunCity zones. According to Saxeria, "Family entertainment centres are concepts basically meant to increase footfalls at hypermarkets, retaining footprints within the malls, apart from increasing the consumption hours of the consumer in a mall. We are already running 20 family entertainment centres in India with a concept of video games, console gaming, bowling alles apart from sports bar express as well. For the next two years, we are shifting focus into setting up many sports bar express concepts in India."
Rashmi Punwar, spokesperson from Suncity Entertainment said, "We are setting up a 60,000 sq ft 'Viking' entertainment centre in Jaipur. Plans are on the anvil to set up six similar such centres in India by this year-end. We plan to invest Rs 200 crore in the first phase and the funds would be sourced from the private equity players. We are currently talking to mall developers and residential developers majors in India in order to set up 'Viking' zones within their planned real estate projects." Private equity players are planning to bring in foreign funds in India to tie up with entertainment majors in order to enable the later to offer various options to customers.
As for the rationale behind the move, Punwar explained that the new hang out concepts are meant to bridge the gap between a multiplex and food courts where bowling alles, online gaming, console gaming will be targeted at young generations from school and colleges, redemption games will be aimed at kids below 10 years of age
I think.........

GITAM University president M.V.V.S. type='text'>Global warming could invite sharks to Antarctica: biologists

Global warming could bring ferocious sharks to Antarctic waters, threatening a unique marine life shielded from predators by frigid conditions for millions of years, biologists warn.
Biologists gathered here for the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science warned that the return of predators to Antarctica could prove devastating to its underwater ecosystem.
Antarctica's surrounding waters remain too cold for sharks and other fish capable of crushing shellfish similar to the mollusks living in the vast continent's seas, said University of Rhode Island biology professor Cheryl Wilga.
"As a result, the Antarctic seafloor has been dominated by relatively soft-bodied, slow-moving invertebrates, just as in ancient oceans prior to the evolution of shell-crushing predators," she told a news conference Friday on the sidelines of the conference.
But global warming has already pushed temperatures up by one to two degrees in the past 50 years, and the waters could become hospitable to sharks within the next 100 years, she said.
"The water only needs to remain above freezing year round for it to become habitable to some sharks, and at the rate we're going, that could happen this century," Wilga said.
"Once they get there, it will completely change the ecology of the Antarctic benthic community," she said.
While sharks may one day roam Antarctic waters, crabs are already crawling closer to the vast continent for the first time in ages, adding one more worry for a marine life left intact since the Paleozoic area of 250 million to 500 million years ago, biologists said.
"Predatory crabs are poised to return to warming Antarctic waters for the first time in millions of years, which will disrupt the composition of the archaic marine communities," Rick Aronson, of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Alabama, told the news conference.
"Shallow-water, benthic communities in Antarctica are unique," he said. "Nowhere else do giant pycnogonids, nemerteans and isopods occur in shallow marine environments, cohabiting with fish that have anti-freeze glycoproteins in their blood."
Sven Thatje of National Oceanography Center in Southampton, Britain, urged the international community to take action to curb greenhouse gases that cause global warming and prevent an ecological disaster.
"The crabs are on the doorsteps, they are sitting in deep water, and only a couple of hundred bathymetric meters now separate them from the slightly cooler shallow water in Antarctic shelf environment," he said.
The oceanographer made the crab discovery with other British journalists in January 2007.
He warned that the return of shell-cracking predators to Antarctica "would be a tragic loss for biodiversity in one of the last wild places on Earth."
I think.........

MOTHER

MOTHER This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece. PleaseRead this at a slow pace, digesting every word and inLeisure...do not hurry... This is a treasure...For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom,This is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is Even more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this.

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. 'IsThis the long way?' she asked. And the guide said: 'Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it... ButThe end will be better than the beginning.'

But the young mother was happy, and she would notBelieve that anything could be better than these years. So she Played with her children, and gathered flowers forThem along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; andThe sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried,'Nothing will ever be lovelier than this.'

Then the night came, and the storm, and the path wasDark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother Drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, 'Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come.' And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, andThe children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children,' A little patience and we are there.'So the children climbed, and when they reached the topThey said, 'Mother, we would not have done it without you.'

And the mother, when she lay down at night looked upAt the stars and said, 'This is a better day than the last, for my Children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today, I 've given them strength.'

And the next day came strange clouds which darkenedThe earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped And stumbled, and the mother said: 'Look up. Lift your eyes to the light. ' And the children looked and saw above the clouds An everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond theDarkness. And that night the Mother said, 'This is the best day of all, forI have shown my children God.' And the days went on, and the weeks and the months andThe years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with Courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her, For she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill,And beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And Mother said, 'I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end Is better than the beginning, for my children canWalk alone, and their children after them.'

And the children said, 'You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.'And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gatesClosed after her. And they said: 'We cannot see her But she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She Is a living presence.... ...'Your Mother is always with you... She's the whisper Of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleachIn your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool handOn your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives Inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. She's the place you came from, your first home; andshe's the map you follow with every step you take. I think it is a must read for all of those who care to find out what it feels to be in an Alien land wanting to belong there with glim chances. I have also attached notes on what I feel about her situation highlighted in Grey.I hope you enjoy this read.:)Raju

It is not about boasting of a LN Mittal, or a Hinduja that India is coming of age in the modern world. We as nation of a Billion have always been a nation of contradictions and hypocrites. In Introducing ourselves as a nation in the preamble, we include the word secular... and we provide Haj Pilgrimage assistance and have Endowments departments that run the temples of the country. The few educated (Not literate) and the qualified, are just a drop who would go awash in the ocean of over a billion common men who have neither any common sense nor put their ideas and words of patriotism into action in achieving the ideals of ours as a nation. The ultimate Indian mantra of salvation "Aham Bhrasmi" (I am the Universe), is what MOST of us practice in true utter literal sense. We are concerned and live by the rule of "I, Me & Mine".Dear Writer, I apologize to you on behalf of a majority my fellow countrymen who aren't able to think with common sense in supporting the freedoms that we fought for from 1857 to 1947. I do not know when, but I hope the resurrection of the great ideals of liberty, fraternity and equality that the we as a nation fought for over centuries becomes a reality in our daily lives at least in my life time which would enable us to revere, hug and share the true warmth of indianness with all the souls like you who feel belonged and find salvation here. ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ Banished within & without10

://timesofindia .indiatimes. com/Banished_ within__without/ articleshow/ 2770240.cms

Although I was not born an Indian, there is very little about my appearance, my tastes, my habits and my traditions to distinguish me from a daughter of the soil. My father was born before Partition; the strange history of this subcontinent made him a citizen of three states, his daughter a national of two. In a village in what was then East Bengal, there once lived a poor farmer by the name of Haradhan Sarkar, one of whose sons, Komol, driven to fury by zamindari oppression, converted to Islam and became Kamal. I belong to this family. Haradhan Sarkar was my great-grandfather's father. Haradhan's other descendants obviously moved to India either during or after Partition and became citizens of this country. My grandfather, a Muslim, did not. When I was a child, the notion of the once fashionable pan-Islamic theory was exploded by East Pakistani Muslims fighting their West Pakistani co-religionists. Our struggle was for Bengali nationalism and secularism. Even though I was born well after Partition, the notion of undivided India held me in thrall. I wrote a number of poems and stories lamenting the loss of undivided Bengal, indeed undivided India, even before I visited this country. I simply could not bring myself to accept the bit of barbed wire that kept families and friends apart even though they shared a common language and culture. What hurt most was that this wire had been secured by religion. By my early teens I had forsaken religion and turned towards secular humanism and feminism which sprang from within me and were in no way artificially imposed. My father, a man with a modern scientific outlook, encouraged me to introspect and as I grew older I broke away not just from religion but also from all traditions and customs, indeed the very culture which constantly oppressed, suppressed and denigrated women. When I first visited India, specifically West Bengal, in 1989, I did not for an instant think I was in a foreign land. From the moment I set foot on Indian soil, I knew I belonged here and that it was, in some fundamental way, inseparable from the land I called my own. The reason for this was not my Hindu forebear. The reason was not that one of India's many cultures is my own or that I speak one of her many languages or that I look Indian. It is because the values and traditions of India are embedded deeply within me. These values and traditions are a manifestation of the history of the subcontinent. I am a victim of that history. Then again, I have been enriched and enlivened by it, if one can call it so. I am a victim of its poverty, colonial legacy, faiths, communalism, violence, bloodshed, partition, migrations, exodus, riots, wars and even theories of nationhood. I have been hardened further by my life and experiences in a poverty- and famine-stricken, ill-governed state called Bangladesh. The intolerance and bigotry of Islamic fundamentalists forced me to leave Bangladesh. I was forced to go into exile; the doors of my own country slammed shut on my face for good. Since that moment, I sought refuge in India. When I was finally allowed entry, not for an instant did I think I was in an alien land. Why did I not think so, especially when every other country in Asia, Europe and America felt alien to me? Even after spending 12 years in Europe I could not think of it as my home. It took less than a minute to think of India as my home. Is it because we, India and I, share a common history? Had East Bengal remained a province of undivided India, would the state have tolerated an attack on basic human freedoms and values and the call for death by hanging of a secular writer by the proponents of fundamentalist Islam and self-seeking politicians? How would a secular democracy have reacted to this threat against one of its own? Or is the burden of defending human and democratic values solely a European or American concern? The gates of India remained firmly shut when I needed her shelter the most. The Europeans welcomed me with open arms. Yet, in Europe I always considered myself a stranger, an outsider. After 12 long years in exile when I arrived in India it felt as though I had been resurrected from some lonely grave. I knew this land, I knew the people, I had grown up somewhere very similar, almost indistinguishable. I felt the need to do something for this land and its people. There was a burning desire within me to see that women become educated and independent, that they stand up for and demand their rights and freedom. I wanted my writing to invigorate and contribute in some way to the empowerment of these women who had always been oppressed and suppressed. Meanwhile, a few Islamic fundamentalists in Hyderabad chose to launch a physical attack on me, motivated by the desire to gain popularity among the local masses. This is the manner in which Islamic fundamentalists in secular India are attempting to entice poor, uneducated, uninformed Muslims while simultaneously looking to solidify their votebank within the community. After hearing of the incident in Hyderabad, fundamentalist leaders in West Bengal, where I live, became so excited that they wasted no time in issuing fatwas against me. Students from madrasas who did not even know of my existence joined the fray. They knew of my 'blasphemy' without having read a single one of my books. How did they know? Because their leaders had assured them I had made it my mission to destroy Islam. Therefore, it was their individual and collective responsibility to protect and preserve their faith. Can one find a more perfect example of brainwashing? While their knowledge of my work may be infinitesimal, their knowledge of Islam is equally so and they have turned their faith into a commodity for their own base ends. Almost 20% of India's population is Muslim and, unfortunately, the most vocal representatives of this considerable community are fundamentalists. Educated, civilized, cultured and secular people from the Muslim community are not regarded as representative of the community. What can be a greater tragedy than this? A greater tragedy, arguably, is that I may have to endure in progressive India what I had to endure in Bangladesh. I live practically under house arrest. No public place is allegedly safe for me any longer. Nothing is above suspicion, not even the homes of friends. Even stepping out for a walk is considered unsafe. It is felt I should spend my days in a poorly lit room, grappling with shadows. Those who threaten to kill me are allowed to spew their venom. They have tacitly been given the right to do whatever they desire, from disturbing peace with their demonstrations to terrorizing the common man in the name of faith. Those who oppose them and their unholy brand of communalism, those who take a stance against injustice and untruth are silenced in invidious ways. I am warned both implicitly and explicitly that, for example, a fundamentalists' demonstration is about to take place and it would be best for all concerned if I quietly left the country. Of course, do return by all means, but only when the situation has calmed down, I am advised. But will the situation ever calm down? For the last 13 years I have been waiting for the situation to calm down. I was told the same thing when I left Bangladesh to go into exile. I refuse to leave because to leave would be to accept defeat and hand fundamentalists the victory they have always desired. It would spell defeat for the freedom of expression, independence of thought, democracy and secularism. I simply refuse to allow them this victory. If they are eventually victorious, the loss will be as much mine as India's. If India gives in to the fundamentalists' demand to deport me, the list of demands will become an endless one. A deportation today, a ban tomorrow, an execution the day after. Where will it cease? They will pursue their agenda with boundless enthusiasm, knowing that victory is certain. And, of course, the secular state and its secular custodians will bow down to their every whim and fancy. Giving in to their demands is not a solution and any attempt to appease them makes them even more dangerous and pernicious. Even in my worst nightmares I had not imagined that I would be persecuted in India as I was in Bangladesh. Persecuted by the majority in one and a minority in another, but persecuted just the same. The bigotry, the intolerance, the death threats, the terrors: all the same. I often wonder what good it would do them to kill me. The fundamentalists are very well aware that it may bring them some benefit but will do nothing for the cause of Islam. Islam will remain as it has always remained. Neither I nor any other individual has the ability to destabilize Islam. The face of fundamentalism, its language and its intentions are the same the world over: to grab civilization by the scruff of its neck and drag it back a few millennia, kicking and screaming. My world is gradually shrinking. I, who once roamed the streets without a care in the world, am now shackled. Always outspoken, I am now silenced, unable to demonstrate, left without the means of protesting for what I hold dear. Film festivals, concerts and plays continue around me but I cannot participate. I spend my existence surrounded by walls: a prisoner. But I refuse to acknowledge this as my destiny. I still believe that one day I will be able to resume the life I once enjoyed. I still believe that India, unlike Bangladesh, will triumph over fundamentalism. I still believe that I will find shelter and solace here. The love and affection of Indians is my true shelter and solace. I still believe I will be able to spend the rest of my life here free of worries.

I love this country. I treat this land as my own. If I were to be ejected from this country, it would amount to cold-blooded murder of my most cherished ideals, perhaps a fate far worse than I could meet at the hands of any fundamentalist. I have nowhere to go, no country or home to return to. India is my country, my home. How much more will I have to endure at the hands of fundamentalists and their vote-grabbing political allies for the cardinal sin of daring to articulate the truth? If the subcontinent turns its back on me I have nowhere to go, no means to survive. Even after all that has happened, I still believe, I still dream, that for a sincere, honest, secular writer, India is the safest refuge, the only refuge.

I think.........

"What do they do here?"............bhsriram@gmail.com

man dies and goes to hell. No problems for the first few stops - a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well.
At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back.
Did I mention that the driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek? Well, he was. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it. The next day the same thing happened - Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the next.
This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff.
By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong; what's more, he felt really good about himself. So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, "Big John doesn't pay!"
The driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "And why not?"
With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a bus pass."
Management Lesson: "Be sure there is a problem in the first place before working hard to solve one."
venkat_eedupuganti@yahoo.com
I think.........

TCS cuts staff salaries in tune with tough times

Are companies fair with salary cuts? Write in ........

MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest software exporter, is effecting a small across-the-board cut in employee salaries based on the company’s performance in the third quarter, a move reflecting caution amid tough times for the outsourcing industry. A top company official confirmed the move while stock market analysts said TCS is sending signals that revenue growth has not met internal targets and employees can’t expect a big wage increase this year.

TCS has clipped a portion of the variable pay linked to its performance, effectively reducing an employee’s salary by about 1.5% for the January-March quarter, TCS executive director and global human resources head S Padmanabhan told ET. “We undertake a review of variable pay every quarter and this time, we decided to make an adjustment,” he said. “We will revisit it in April.” This is the first time in two years that the IT giant has reduced the variable portion linked to company performance. Mr Padmanabhan said the outsourcing sector faces macroeconomic challenges, which had to be factored in the quarterly review. The variable pay related to individual performance has not been touched, he added. “This can send a strong signal to the employees that revenues have not measured up to internal targets,” a Mumbai brokerage analyst said. “The cut is small and is unlikely to attract a howl of protests, but employees will get the message that all is not well with the sector. Instead of giving them a shock at the time of annual salary review, the management has sought to lower their expectations of wage inflation through this small cut,” the analyst said. TCS had reported a 5% quarter-on-quarter revenue growth and 6.7% rise in net profit for October-December, in line with market expectations. It had expressed ‘cautious optimism’ in the face of fears over a US slowdown and reasserted its ability to manage the rise in rupee’s external value. A recruitment expert said a move by any of the top three software companies to temper variable pay would be quickly followed by smaller companies. “In the last couple of months, we have seen some lead indicators that there is moderation in wage increases. Companies have been following a little bit of a cautious approach,” Ma Foi Consultants COO E Balaji said. Ma Foi data reveal that yearly wage hikes have fallen to ‘high single percentages’ from 15-16%. Job-hoppers get not more than a 12-15% hike in their new jobs compared to 25-30% earlier. “It is all part of the business cycle. Once stability comes back, wages will return to normalcy,” Mr Balaji said. After years of heady growth, India’s outsourcing industry is facing the prospect of a slowdown due to US economic worries triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis. "This is about more than simply a financial transaction, one company taking over another. It's about preserving the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation."
Google's opposition isn't a surprise, given that Microsoft views Yahoo as a crucial weapon in its battle to gain ground on Google in the Internet's booming search and advertising markets.
Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft has been trying to depict a Yahoo takeover as a boon for both advertisers and consumers because the two companies together would be able to compete against Google more effectively.
But Google is painting a starkly different picture, asserting that Microsoft will be able to stifle innovation and leverage its dominating Windows operating system to set up personal computers so consumers are automatically steered to online services, such as e-mail and instant messaging, controlled by the world's largest software maker.
In a move that illustrates just how badly Google wants to torpedo the deal, Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt called Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang Friday to offer his help in repelling Microsoft, according to a report Sunday on The Wall Street Journal's Web site, which cited anonymous people familiar with the matter.
The assistance didn't include a counterbid, but may have included supporting other potential suitors, or a revenue guarantee in exchange for an ad partnership with Yahoo, the people said, according the newspaper.
AT&T Inc., Time Warner Inc. and News Corp. aren't planning to enter the bidding, the Journal said, citing the people familiar.
To help make its point, Google pointed to the way Microsoft previously used Windows to help extend the reach of its Web browser and other applications — a strategy that triggered a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit alleging the software maker illegally used its operating system to stifle competition. The dispute ended with a 2002 settlement that required Microsoft to abandon some of its past practices.
"Could Microsoft now attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over the Internet that it did with the PC?" Drummond wrote.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said preventing Microsoft from buying Yahoo would undermine competition by allowing Google to become even more dominant than it already is on the Internet
"Microsoft is committed to openness, innovation, and the protection of privacy on the Internet," Smith said. "We believe that the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! will advance these goals."
If they get together, Microsoft and Yahoo would have about 16 percent of the worldwide Internet search market — still far behind Google's 62 percent share, according to comScore Media Metrix. But Microsoft and Yahoo already are far bigger in than Google in e-mail and instant messaging, and conceivably would be in a better position to squash rival services if they combined.
Illustrating the enormous stakes involved in a deal that could reshape the technology and media industries, Google and Microsoft are already debating the pros and cons before Yahoo has responded to the offer.
Yahoo so far has little to say except that its board will carefully examine Microsoft's bid — a process that "can take quite a bit of time," according to a message posted on the Sunnyvale-based company's Web site.
The review "will include evaluating all of the company's strategic alternatives, including maintaining Yahoo as an independent company," Yahoo said on its Web site.
Most analysts believe Yahoo will have little choice but to sell to Microsoft, with its stock price near a four-year low at the time of the bid and its profits falling since late 2006. When it was first announced, Microsoft's offer was 62 percent above Yahoo's market value — a premium analysts doubt any other suitor will be able to top.
If Yahoo accepts, antitrust regulators in both the United States and Europe are expected to begin an exhaustive review that some experts think could last a year. Microsoft believes it could get the necessary approvals to take over Yahoo late this year.
If nothing else, Google probably will try to raise enough alarms about the Microsoft-Yahoo deal to delay its approval for as long as possible. By doing so, Google would have more time to draw up plans to counteract the combination.
Google also is borrowing a page from Microsoft's book by urging antitrust regulators to take a hard look at the proposed marriage between its two rivals.
Just days after Google struck a $3.1 billion deal to buy online ad service DoubleClick Inc. last year, Microsoft began lobbying regulators to block the transaction. U.S. regulators blessed Google's DoubleClick acquisition late last year after an eight-month review, but the antitrust inquiry in Europe remains open.
I think.........

Reaching Heights

Dear All

Here is some news -updates

1.( HR/97) Mr.Durga Prasad became AVP -HR @ HSBC EDPI ,Kolkata...

2.(MBA/90) Dr.Appala raju became Sr.Professor at SIMS Trichy Kerala

3.( HR/97) Mr.YV Anada Kumar Raju became Head -HR @ for SoftWare co. at HYD

Many congratulatulations to all
I think.........

Square Watermelon - Vamsi Gogoneni/bbm-98

Great article on finding a unique way to meet a market need, a customer focusedapproach and thinking out-of-the-box (or maybe in the box in this case!).Lessons of the Square WatermelonJapanese grocery stores had a problem. They are much smaller than their UScounterparts and therefore don't have room to waste. Watermelons, big and round, wasted a lot of space. Most people would simply tell the grocery stores thatwatermelons grow round and there is nothing that can be done about it. That ishow I would assume the vast majority of people would respond. But some Japanesefarmers took a different approach. If the supermarkets wanted a squarewatermelon, they asked themselves, "How can we provide one?" It wasn't longbefore they invented the square watermelon. The solution to the problem of round watermelons wasn't nearly as difficult tosolve for those who didn't assume the problem was impossible to begin with andsimply asked how it could be done. It turns out that all you need to do is placethem into a square box when they are growing and the watermelon will take on theshape of the box. This made the grocery stores happy and had the added benefit that it was mucheasier and cost effective to ship the watermelons. Consumers also loved thembecause they took less space in their refrigerators which are much smaller thanthose in the US meaning that the growers could charge a premium price for them. What does this have do with anything besides square watermelons? There are a fewlessons that can you can take away from this story which help you in all partsof your life. Here are a few of them:Don't Assume: The major problem was that most people had always seen roundwatermelons so they automatically assumed that square watermelons wereimpossible before even thinking about the question. Things that you have beendoing a certain way your entire life have taken on the aura of the roundwatermelon and you likely don't even take the time to consider if there isanother way to do it. Breaking yourself from assuming this way can greatlyimprove your overall life as you are constantly looking for new and better waysto do things. This was one of the most difficult things for me to do becausemost of the assumptions I make, I don't even realize that I'm making them. Theyseem perfectly logical on the surface, so I have to constantly make an effort toquestion them.Question habits: The best way to tackle these assumptions is to question yourhabits. If you can make an effort to question the way you do things on aconsistent basis, you will find that you can continually improve the way thatyou live your life. Forming habits when they have been well thought out isusually a positive thing, but most of us have adopted our habits from variouspeople and places without even thinking about them. I have changed a largenumber of habits that I have had after taking the time to question them andcontinue to do so. Some of them I have noidea where they came from while others I can trace to certain people orinstances in my life. It's a never ending process, but by doing this, you canconsistently strive toward making all aspects of your life more enjoyableinstead of defaulting to what you have now.Be creative: When faced with a problem, be creative in looking for a solution. This often requires thinking outside the box. Most people who viewed thisquestion likely thought they were being asked how they could genetically alterwater melons to grow square which would be a much more difficult process toaccomplish. By looking at the question from an alternative perspective, however, the solution was quite simple. Being creative and looking at things in differentways in all portions of your life will help you find solutions to many problemswhere others can't see them. I am not a creative person, but I've found that themore that you look at things from different perspectives, the more creative Ihave become. It's a learned art and builds upon itself.Look for a better way: The square watermelon question was simply seeking abetter and more convenient way to do something. The stores had flagged a problemthey were having and asked if a solution was possible. It's impossible to find abetter way if you are never asking the question in the first place. I try to askif there is a better way of doing the things that I do and I constantly writedown the things I wish I could do (but currently can't) since these are usuallyhints about steps I need to change. Get into the habit of asking yourself, "Isthere a better way I could be doing this?" and you will find there often is.Impossibilities often aren't: If you begin with the notion that something isimpossible, then it obviously will be for you. If, on the other hand, you decideto see if something is possible or not, you will find out through trial anderror.Take away the lessons from the square watermelons and apply them to all areas inyour life (work, finances, relationships, etc) and you will find that byconsistently applying them, you will constantly be improving all aspects of yourlife.
I think.........

Parents and Parents -to-be......................Sai Madhukar.BBM/96

PARENT -
Job Description This is hysterical. Forward
this on to all the PARENTS you know, in appreciation for everything they do on a
daily basis, letting them know they are appreciated for the fabulous job they
do. .or forward with love to anyone thinking of applying for the job. **
AND A FOOTNOTE "THERE IS NO RETIREMENT -- EVER!!!
Sai Madhukar.BBM/96...
madhukar_rathi@yahoo.com
I think.........

I wish for Gitamite Alumni Meet - 25th Jan 2008

Dear Sheela Madam,

I am Kavita from (MHRM) 2005-2007, currently working with DQ Entertainment
Limited.
